The 5 most important questions to ask in People Management-Part 1
Today, I will start the first post in my series of “Value Creation Practices”.Here I share my experiences on how to grow a (tech)company, both start-and scale-ups, providing you with learnings, inspiration or practical tips on your journey to value creation.
Proper People Management is one of the most crucial skill any founder or manager of some kind should have. Being successful here, is the precondition te being successful as a business. But of course, that is easier said than done.
To reduce the complexity of proper People Management, I defined 5 questions you should ask yourself. If your answer to any of these 5 questions is any less than 100% YES, then you have got some serious stuff to do.
Starting off, the first question is: What % of all your team members would you enthousiastically rehire today?
This question is about ensuring that the right person is on the right job. In reality, most companies fail to do so. To keep on asking yourself this question, is to keep on being conscious. And if the answer to the question is NO, or you have to deeply think about it, you might have some homework on your hands. Not necessarily to instantly fire people, but immediate action may be needed. To name a few: again discuss your expectations, the agreed performance and the progress on the desired competences.
And even if your answer would be a YES, you should be careful too. Are you demanding enough? Or should you raise the bar? A remark that I receive often is that “it is difficult to find good new people”. Yes it is, but filing vacancies suboptimal is not the way forward and will block your way to create value.
